Crime Prevention — Serve and Protect Our Tots

What It Is

A safety initiative, that provides training for childcare drivers as well as background checks for drivers and other childcare workers.

A community partnership, in which childcare centers volunteer to allow patrolling officers to enter their property to inspect vans and other vehicles used in transporting children.

How It Works

Participating childcare centers place “SPOT Check” stickers on their vehicles and on their property, indicating that they are "open for inspection" and that any patrolling public safety official may stop by, announce his or her presence, and inspect the vehicles.

Participating centers also have the option of training classes for their drivers, led by the Sheriff's Office and the Memphis Police Department. In addition, at the center's request, the Sheriff's Office will bring McGruff to lead safety education sessions for children.

Another benefit for participants is that the Sheriff's Office can run, at the center's request, background checks on drivers or other center employees, at no cost to the center. This is an optional service.
